Since there's been quite a bit of FF discussion in the General thread, I figured it'd be best to make a separate FF thread. I'm sure many people here like this series.
I'll start by saying that my favourites are VII, VIII and VI in that order.

Good plan

As for myself, fav games: FFX2; FFX; FF9; FF8
Favourite character: Rikku
Favourite summon: Ixion

Hmmmm, hard to choose!

Faves: IV, VI, I, IX and X
Least: VII, XII, III

Main series anyway, also really enjoyed Tactics, not as fond of Crystal Chronicles series, but they are really a totally different animal. Also really need to get and finish FFIV: The After.

Favorite character has got to be Kain.

kazuya316
18th Nov 2009, 11:34
What's IV: The After like? I've never really wanted to get it cos of the whole multiple episode thing it has.

Oh, and it may be the popular (or unpopular :icon_e_wink:) choice, but my favourite character has always been Cloud. Squall and Paine are awesome too.

My turn! Favorite games would be IX, then possibly VI and X. I will have to say I'm not a fan of playing VII, but I do like watching it be played, so I'm not completely blasphemis. XD

Least fave games would be II, VI (only when I play, not the story of it), and XII even though I haven't played it, Keith has though.

Fave character(s) would be Vincent Valentine <3 and Eiko for playable and Reno <3 for none playable.

I used to love the FF series, but lately I've just grown to think their generic and cliche. :I

VII's plot moved way too fast and isn't explained very well, and the whole 'Evil Corporation' is the most cliche plot element in existance.

I can't say much for VIII, I never got very far in it.

IX seemed promising but the jerk who sold it to me forgot to tell me that there was a dent in Disc 1, so I could never play it. >:I

X has the worst and most depressing ending ever.

Crisis Core was probably my favorite FF. The series as a whole are way over-rated.

Completed II, IV. V, VII, VIII, IX and X.

Played but didnt complete III and VI. But intend to in due time. VI being the PS1 version and III being the DS version. Cant be arsed playing III on a NES emulator.

I (PS1 version) i intend to play and finish also!

Found crisis core to be very enjoyable except for the repetitive missions!

I've only finished I,VII,X-2...I have them all though. I got stuck in VI 4 goddamn times. Once you get stuck in that game it is impossible to get unstuck. Now I can't even play it anymore because the cartridge is corrupt and won't save.

1 is my favourite by far. Thing's just happen in it. There is no story. The last boss is the first boss. There is no development for it... It just happens. I didn't ruin the game for you. I just saved you getting to the end of that game and going "What is he doing here?"

Before this discussion moves another post, there is something you all must understand.

THERE ARE ONLY TEN FINAL FANTASY GAMES.
I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X.

Thats it.

After making X, Hironobu Sakaguchi and a bunch of other talented folks left and founded Mistwalker studios, makers of such fine games as Blue Dragon and Lost Oddessy.

Any Final Fantasy game not made by this man, is not a Final Fantasy. The spin-offs don't count for much either.

That is all.

Least: VIII, X, X-2
Fav characters: Sabin, Edgar, Locke, Mog, T.G. Cid, Aerith, Tonberry
Hated characters: cloud, sephiroth (only hate these guys now cause of the stupid fan base)
Favorite summon: Odin ^^

I understand what you are saying here, but Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssy kinda sucked... I played Blue Dragon to the end and man, it was not a very good game. Lost Odyssy lost me pretty fast, I got bored.

And Kazuya - FFIV: The after is decent, what I played of it. FFIV is my favorite game of all time, its important to know this... and The After plays much like IV, with some added flavor. It has a ton of episodes to it, but there's only 3 I think that are the main story, which by my understanding only haves 10-15 hours to complete. All the other bits are just kind of side bits that let you have some more story regarding old characters. Not sure how they fit into the timeline, however.

I have to disagree, both these games were excellent story driven epics. I'd happily hold Lost Odyssey up there with the best of them. The best of them being FF X and VIII for me.

It's possible I didn't like them because I was expecting sooo much from them. I mean, there was just nothing that made them special, imo. Especially Blue Dragon, man, I wanted that to be so amazing... but it was just meh. The story was too predictable and clicking every inch of every stage you went in to got old after, oh, one dungeon. With Sakaguchi, Toriyama and Uematsu, I expected so much more. You like them, great, that's your opinion. I'm glad you liked them, I wish I could have enjoyed them as much as you seem to have.

Hoh, well VII was my first so will always have a special place in my heart, no matter how much dissidia tries to undermine how awesome cloud was, though everything after that was a bit downhill. Cloud was an original character concept and was just as deep and thought provoking as Sephiroth, who I think is an excellently well thought out badguy. Didn't like the ending though, Sephiroth had physics on his side. Also felt bad for Tifa, I replayed Disc 1 recently and I just didn't see it where Cloud falls that deeply in love with Aeris. Could be that whole Zack's Memory thing, havent completed Crisis Core, really want to.

VIII I enjoyed immensly though the magic system was awful towards the end, it was just gethering the strongest magic you could find and equipping it in the right places. And what was with that levelling system, oh dear god. But really enjoyed the sci-fi setting, can't wait for XIII. Oh and that Random rule! God! How I hated that Random rule.

XI I enjoyed the first playthrough and liked the steampunk envirnoment, but just could not stick it the second time through. Enjoyed Zidane until you find out hes an interdimensional monkey.
And X! God, I have never disliked a good game so much! That laughing scene! Wanted to rip my eyes from my sockets. And why is Tidus such a bitch! He kicks ass in blitzball, a seemingly mans game but cries without fear in front of a group of people that a) he has to hang out with after and b) has travelled halfway across the globe killing some badass foes. I hated that guy, really wish you could of just switched to Auron running around the world map. Damn he was cool. And Rikku, never has there been a more uninvited guest in an rpg, "Oh hi, I just came out of this lake and took off all my clothes while all of you were watching, can I come along tee hee!" disgusting!

XII, .... I dont know where to begin, so I'm not even gonna do that.

And Dissidia, oh dear gods Dissidia. Horrible, great game mechanic, little bit hectic at times, Sephiroth is impossible to control the way the computer does it, and Squall is an angsty teen, I mean he was angsty before, but it was like "Oh we must make up for the inflation of angistiness, what was angsty ten years ago, might not be considered angsty now!" (jamais vú) and Cloud just seems to question the existence of the game, "why are we fighting?" "I don't know why I'm fighting, its like some person in a god-like realm has a simple control interface over and forces me to live on in this horrible cliched version of an apocolypse.

Kefka was cool though, we got the job done.

Runners up would be VIII and X. Cant wait for VIII to get a European PSP downloadable release!

Undeniable. XD

VII kind of bugs me a little. I stand by that Materia is one of the greatest magic systems ever concieved for a game, but I was seriously unimpressed by the plot. If the story hadn't been so hyped by the time I got to it and there wasn't such massive overt love for the game I might like it more, but it's never really been in my favourites.

Dissidia is one FF that really shocked me with how good it was.
I played it in Japanese when it first came out and was thuroughly unimpressed, but then bought it when it came out in English to have something to play with one of my housemates. I went two weeks without playing anything else just because I was so sucked into Dissidia.

yeah it sucks you in, but so does heroin. , you just dont have the control over your character or the space on the psp's screen to handle without resorting to a little bit of button bashing, the replays look awesome but thats just because you can actually see what you're doing.

Sephiroth was the coolest guy there, all the bad guys were well developed and had ideas, and inspiration, the game developers just assumed people would love the heroes and put hardly any work into them. I spit on them.

Its final fantasy, they could be out in -10C weather and still be in tank tops and short shorts. huzzah for video characters ;D

heck the bigger issue is... When do they SHOWER!?! See? video games doesnt make people more violent, just smellier.

I mean imagine you are fighting a monster which has bitten you about 25 times in the arm and you are like, "I have to go to a hospital first, before we continue this journey."

Cait Sith holds a special place in my heart just for that part where he has the big dramatic death in the Black Materia temple... then he just wanders up again and says, "What's everyone so sad about? That was just one of my bodies. I have plenty."
I'm still laughing to this day XD

My favourite would be VI and IX. played 1-12, excluding 11.
11 was the biggest mistake. It should have been a spin off like crystal chronicles or something, and not a main number in the series. It alienated a lot of people who liked some or most of the first ten games... then because of that people expected more of 12 when the series came back to an offline format, unfortunately 12 was an abortion of a game, with a dull predictable story, and whats worse, with the gambit system, the game played itself for you... I mean who wants to play a game that plays itself, all i found myself doing was listening to bad voice acting and using a left analog stick to move my character around, ocasionally mashing buttons for quickenings, the animation of which becomes boring as hell after the 50th time...
Im not looking foward to 13 anymore.
They could make a sequel to VI because there was loads that could be done since the world had already been destroyed, but I hope that they dont cos it wouldnt be the same.
Setzer, Irving, Cid Highwind, Freya, Auron were around my favourite good characters. Kefka, Rufus and Kuja were favourite bad characters.
Fran, Caith Sith, Quina, Gau, Lulu were the good characters I hated the most. Heidegger, Scarlet and X-death were about the worst bad characters ever.

Crossburn

My favourite FFs in order would be

FFVII, FFVIII, FFX, FFIV, FFT, FFVI, FFTA, FFXII, FFIX, FFTA2, FFIII, FFV, FFI&II, FFX-2

I haven't started on any of the Crystal Chronicles yet.

And the evil corporation in FF7 wasn't cliched for its time and they handled the storyline very well. So, it remains as the best RPG and video game I've played so far. It was my fourth FF, after FFX, FF8 and FF9.

FFT was weird at the end though. T.G. Sid was way overpowered. It was like giving us a final boss for a character! I so enjoyed breaking every character's weapons, then their armour and then crushing them into dust.

FFX had no use for romance IMO. It felt like it was only there so they had a reason to put Suteki Da Ne (BEST SONG EVAH!!) and so they could throw in a FFX-2 (which only had good music).

My favourite character is Squall Leonhart. I preferred him when he was less sociable though.

And FFXIII!!!!!!!! I am bugging my mom back home to get it for me!

even if FFXIV turns out to be an amazing game i dont think I'll purchase or play it. Not gonna be happy bout the pay per month thing specially in this economy. sick of grinding for hours and hours -_-
also sick of the drama and politics of guilds, kins, clans, etc.
but i am interested bout the story line they're gonna use as well as how pretty its gonna be =)

Well, I've learnt after Arcanum that PC games are a no-no. So no FF14 for me, either.

I did not know this! It pleases me. Except the xbox part but I will not let my PS3 loyalty become a part of this discussion!

I only saw that at the GC in Cologne this year on the fact sheet. There was no definite.
But i mean ffxi was also available for XBOX360

From what I've heard it's a PS3 exclusive

Yeah it'll be on the 360 too. Square Enix went back on the sony exclusive contract for XIII so I'd imagine it will happen again. The market right now isn't the best for console exclusives.

FFXIII tbh doesnt make sense on the XBOX 360, because they are currently thinking of releasing it on 2 BluRay. How many DVDs are this?
like 30 dvds.
I would say, happy dvd switching every 15 minutes.
XBOX 360 needs a better data system for these kind of games.
ffxiv wont have so much intense data, because everything needs to be transferable through the internet, so i assume, that the installation will probably not exceed like 15 GB.

I somehow doubt that they've managed to completely fill a BluRay with compressed content.

Anyway, you could always buy the Xbox HD-DVD drive

The actual game data comprises about 8gb out of 38gb total. Yes people the whole package is only 38gb. Thats one bluray with loads of room to spare. The only possible explanation for a second bluray would be either uncompressing the whole shebang and/or a bonus disk.

The rest of the data is believe it or not, for the ingame movies. They can cut a bolock load off the size by lowering the data rates.

And to be fair, using dual layer DVD's you can store 9.4gb on them, most likely a little less than that ideal figure but whatever. That means you could get everything the PS3 has currently on about 4 disks with a little effort.

Relate that to any other game that has multiple disks and ask yourself "How long did each disk last?"

hangfire

and/or a bonus disk.

I'd say that this is what it will be - it probably works out cheaper to make the game discs all the same and ship a bonus disc than it would be to have different types of game disc. (and a bonus DVD wouldn't be all fancy and 21st Century)

They could do it like Forza 3 did things with having the base car and track set on Disc 1, and all the extra ones (about 80%) on Disc 2.

Or you could just do without the in-game movies :)

Really?
Because it's already out in Japan, on a single Blu-Ray.
The file structure reveals 32.6 GB of cinematics and 6.8 GB of game data (ah, Jayse mentioned this).
So if they hella compress the cinematics (1080p -> 720p?) I see it fitting on 3 DL DVDs.

Reports from the FFXIII bus in San Franciso say the 360 version appeared to be the exact same as the PS3 build, but that was only a 10 minute demo.

Ive got a PS3 and flatmate next door has a 360 and we're both gettin FFXIII. Will be interesting to see if theres a difference with resolution or loading times.

Either way the PS3 is a powerhouse of a machine and will out do the 360 as game technology get better :P

I dunno man, PC is the best alright for First person and mmorpg games.

I assume PC will be the best platform for playing FFXIV?

It doesn't really matter that much on PS3 since you can just plug in a USB keyboard and Mouse for them games.

That it might be but no games use the technology to the extent possible.

360 games on average look much better. Mostly because it's easier to develop for having Direct X and all. The PS3 doesn't have Direct X, leading to a lot of lazy ports. I think there's some ridiculous bottlenecks in the hardware itself too.

I remember the demo of bioshock didn't even filter the textures on Big Daddy.

Sounds messy...think id use PS3 controller or just play it on a PC. Would a keyboard be a most for FFXIV?

Funnily enough I use a PS3 controller on my PC. For the sole reason of playing the pc versions of FF7 and 8

My favourite Final Fantasy was 6. There was a nice feeling to the oldschool ones the newer ones lacked, though the newer ones had a nice feeling of their own, so it's all good. I think they've still kept a lot of what I like about FF up until 10 but I'm unsure about 12 and 13.

Terra was my favourite, I guess I love green hair! And she has really nice clothes in most of the artwork.
