So, what are people watching or looking forward to this season? It's a bit thin on the ground, there's a lot of the usual loli and h-game based cack - but a few things jump out as worth watching.
Durarara!:
From the makers of the excellent Baccano! (they must have a thing for !'s in the title). There's a guy stamping on some ko-gal's phone in the trailer, whilst laughing maniacally... I like this:
0YVNwzhaR78
Dance in the Vampire Bund:
Oh, something about vampires...hrm. The premise looks interesting however, an extremely rich vampire from the Tepes family (as in, Vlad Tepes, Vlad the Impaler..) pays off the national debt of Japan (!!) in order to get her own island. She proceeds to make preparations for revealing the existence of vampires to the world:
X3oLHQpIaMs
Katanagatari:
Nice period piece with some swordplay + interesting artwork and music:
DrFY-TZeYVY
Uchuu Senkan Yamato Fukkatsu-hen (Movie):
Oh yeah. Power up the wave motion gun! After nearly 26 years of false starts there's finally a new Yamato movie:
GINpo3188yk
The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya (Movie):
Not sure what to make of this, but I'll be checking it out anyway.
e5r6eAZmrHs
Gundam Unicorn (OVA):
A new Yamato movie and now the first UC Gundam show since 1993.. mabye this season isn't so bad after all. Neo Zeon are back and there is a Char-like character called ...wait for it...Full Frontal. This is going to rock.
Based on the series of light novels.

Katanagatari looks quite interesting.
Might watch Durarara! Small chance of watching Haruhi.
Now, Gundam Unicorn, thats something I have to see.
You left out Nodame :(
This makes me sad.
Either ive become horribly cynical/jaded or this season is awful

I agree with you actually ... and I even stopped watching Nodame Paris after I realised that they weren't bothered orchestrating the pieces. :smith:

With each passing season I begin to realize my interest in anime/manga is biased towards older titles or stuff I watched/read several years ago . Not saying that post 1990s stuff is a complete letdown nor am I saying the 90's were perfect either . The recent increase/onslaught of series aimed at the lowest common denominator often makes me worry that my interest in anime/manga will be compromised , thank God there are still some titles left of interest.
Firstly its nice to see Basara back again but I've a suspicion Yukimura and Masamunes roles are being diminished and well they kind of made the show what it was in terms of entertainment value.
I am genuinely looking forward to the Nanoha movie (any magical girl series gets a plus in my book because those are what introduced me to anime/manga). I'm hoping Deen doesn't make a mess of the Fate stay night movie (I wish Ufotable was doing it instead as I enjoyed their adaptation of Kara no kyokai). I've never seen/read anything to do with Cobra or Yamato so those would probably be lost on me as I assume they are follow ups/remakes.
For the most part I hate the action/fantasy genre ( though I have exceptions) so I'm giving Katanagatari a miss. I am a bit divided on the Gundam Ova as that franchise has been very hit or miss with me lately. I eagerly await Cat Shit one (If memory serves me right this comes out in March I think, not too sure) and thought legend of koizumi was both hilarious and original.
As for the haruhi movie I am probably one of the few people out there that can't stand that series , mostly for the main characters personality.
I did like/and relate to at times Kyon though.
Chu-Bra: From what I watched and read of the manga I found this to be little more than a pedo-pandering fanservice show and nothing more. I would like to point out I am not accusing everyone who watches this a pedophile , maybe the humour appeals to you (though I certainly can't say the same for myself)
Durarara: I have read two chapters of the manga and the first anime episode , I enjoyed Baccano and feel brains base are capable of good animation which they make clear here but I need at least two or three episodes more to judge given how the first episode was quite slow in parts. Whereas Baccano was more seinen this one feels sadly a bit more shounen.
Dance in the vampire bund: The first episode is enough for me to drop this, its also only going to be 12 episodes I hear. I felt through shafts gimmicky visuals and fillerish beginning (which had no place in the original manga) had a negative effect on the athmosphere/pacing of the show and given the low episode count coupled with the fact they will struggle to fit much of the manga into the anime doing fillers so early on is not a good sign. I also think the artwork is not on par with the manga.
Before I give off the wrong idea, even though I like the manga version I do not like the lolicon fanservice , I can however watch/read/appreciate a series with that sort of content if the show/manga has something of merit (ie: good action/humour etc)
Omamori Himawri: I'm not really a big fan of shounen harem romance comedies but the manga of this one surprised me quite a bit, the drawings/character expressions made the humour amusing and the attempt to develop the characters was something at least and the main male character isn't totally useless. I also liked how some of the female characters could actually fight and didn't all look like 10 year olds. The action helps the series from getting too boring.
The anime though is again going to have a low episode count and while the pace/animation is reasonable , the voices don't sit well with me (although I do like those particular voice actors but feel they are miscast). The character designs are also an insult to the manga equivalents .
Soranowoto-Though the backstory seems a little cliche and it looks too much like K-on/is too moe , the music/sound which is an important point of this series is top notch . If the creators can make the best out of the story they've got we could have a winner on our hands.
Okami Kakushi-While Umineko was enjoyable in its better parts, it was often at times an absolute chore to watch. I hated season one of Higurashi but loved the second when it got going so I am hoping this one is more like Higurashi's second season and the stronger points of umineko. Its a blessing that Peach-pit did the character designs for this and deen isn't doing the animation.
Qwaser of the stigmata-I read the available volumes of this in a day , the action aspects were enjoyable and it was overall alot edgier/more violent than the usual shounen series which we could do with more of. There was far too much fanservice however and the lactation aspect of it was a bit silly to be perfectly honest . The anime is in the hands of a new studio and that worries me and while I could careless about censored fanservice , I'm hoping the action remains un-edited. I intend to check out episode one then come back to it when/if it bypasses where I am in the manga.
Baka to tesuto- Pokemon meets Harem. I'll give the studio the fact their production quality has pretty much skyrocket on a positive note , its well animated but I never liked the manga and the rpg battle aspect is wasted on me.
Now finally , Godchild, Rozen maiden season 3 , proper angel sanctuary anime when?

tl;dr
Firstly, I'm going to call you out on judging by genre and tell you that it's filthy and wrong.
Then I'm gonna do a complete reversal and say that it's generally easier to pick a decent anime out of a bunch when you discount anything and everything which can be summed up with the words "harem comedy."
Lastly, you should stop hoping for sequels to your favourite shows and adaptations of your favourite manga/novel/eroge/etc.
I think that it's been proved to us enough times at this stage for us to just acknowledge that studios produce a hell of a lot more quality animation when you let them bath in the glorious waters of originality.
Short version: New is good. More new stuff.

THIS.
How long do I have to wait for someone to throw a half decent action/sci-fi backed by a good story my way?
Screw it, I'll just go watch Giant Robo again.

Katanagatari looks quite interesting.
Might watch Durarara! Small chance of watching Haruhi.
Now, Gundam Unicorn, thats something I have to see.
And, even better, the voice actor who's playing Full Frontal is the same guy who played Char in the original Gundam Series' (Ikeda Shuuichi).
