I've seen a few issues of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni around. If you can find the first arc I'd say give that a go. Nice bit of psychological horror and mystery, definitely one of my favourites.

Higurashi got less scary as the series went on, but Onikakushi-hen was really creepy the first time I watched it, in retrospect, it seems a lot more sad than scary.
