SEED is the show that got me interested in Gundam, would you believe. At the time, it seemed pretty badass with it's pumping TM Revolution techno and beam spam to beat the band. But, rose tinted glasses and all that, there wasn't much around to compare it to at the time.

I do remember the second half of the show taking a far more dramatic, darker turn, and actually being really engaging, but you have to wade through 40-something episodes of dross to get to that part. Of course, when SEED: Destiny came out, I started watching that too thinking it would follow a similar pattern, but ...er, no. No wonder the director hasn't worked on anything since.

Anyway, I must talk about Odin:

This film has been panned by numerous people, usually as the most boring thing they'd ever seen. There are stories of people at screenings of Odin writhing in physical pain on the floor after an hour, some anime cons have even run "I Survived Odin" events with free tshirts for those brave souls who stuck it out till the end.

So, naturally, I thought it would be great to watch of a Saturday evening.

The first thing that strikes you about Odin is that it looks really good. Superb, in fact. The animation was obviously high budget fare. They'd also assembled a great cast of VAs (Norio Wakamoto, woo!) and some talented directors are involved. That's where things start to fall apart - directors, plural. No less than *three* different directors are involved in this film and multiple scriptwriters each with their own visions, whims and style. Not good, too many cooks spoil the broth.

The "story" involves a new class of "photon sailer" (laser/light powered) space ship that will be exploring beyond the bounds of the solar system for the first time. With a crew of hot-shot geniuses who same capable of solving any problem but spend most of their time running around the ship high-fiving each other whilst hair-metal from 1985's chart toppers, Loudness, blasts away in the background. Shortly into their maiden voyage, they receive a distress call from a space liner in the asteroid belt that's under attack from some kind of robotic destructo-thing that's quite hostile to any form of life. The only survivor is a nordic princess who helps decipher a data crystal she has in her posession, which may contain a map showing the way to a civilisation called Odin...or, not. Christ knows.

It's hard to recall exactly what happens in the 2+ hours running time of this film, because you start getting a mild concussion at the 00:30:00 mark. Then everything becomes a blur of the crew pressing switches, warping, running around the ship, running around an alien ship, pressing more switches and pulling levers, warping again, running around the ship again. Rinse, repeat.

Odin is very typical of the mid to late 80s anime boom, when every hair brained idea for an OVA or movie got millions of yen thrown at it. It was also, famously and quite obviously, part of producer Yoshinobu Nishizaki's failed attempt to restart the Space Battleship Yamato franchise in various forms. It was even dubbed into english and released here and in the US as Odin: Starlight Mutiny, although with about 45 minutes (mercifully) removed.

So as a historical curiousity/train wreck, perhaps the anime equivalent of the David Lynch Dune movie, it might be worth a look. Otherwise, leave it on the shelf and back slowly away.

Was wondering why Medaka Box was so enjoyable. Just realised it's written by Nisio Isin! Same man behind Bakemonogatari, Nisemonogatari and Katanagatari. Yay!

Maybe it'll end up being as good as the new Lupin the Third? Which reminds me.

All of you. Drop what you're doing and watch Lupin the Third: A Woman named Mine Fujiko. Amongst others it's got Takeshi Koike and Seiki Tamura all over it and has Sayo Yamamoto directing. These guys have had their grubby little hands all over some damned great anime during the past ten years.

Fair warning to those of you who might prefer the typical moe archetype; It features a strong, mature woman who has her own agenda and is not above using her sexuality to get what she wants as the central character. Also features boobs from the outset. Show of the year.

Still watching Gundam AGE (Good), Aquarion EVOL (Good). Started Eureka Seven Ao and Space Brothers.

I'm watching Michiko to Hatchin. Eventually. Excellent so far. I'm really loving the cinematography (for want of a better word)

Watched the first couple of episodes of Polar Bear Cafe last night. It's a nicely slow paced gag comedy about some anthropomorphic animals that hang around a cafe run by a polar bear, who's voiced by Sakurai Takahiro, none other than Suzaku from Code Geass. Speaking of Code Geass, the other main character in the show, Panda, is played by god-damn Lelouch!! (Jun Fukuyama).

The sheer amount of voice talent on display here something else, apart from the main cast of Code Geass, there's VAs who've worked on Tatami Galaxy, Durarara!!, Gundam AGE, Naruto, Gurren Lagann, Macross Frontier and Lucky Star...to name but a few!

Someone's even put together a handy reference video.

Watched RideBack on Netflix recently; disappointed.

It had the right ingredients to be a good show (though probably not a great show). The problems were manifold, though only obvious in retrospect - I thought they were going to kick it up a notch at some point, but I didn't realize there were only 12 episodes.

    Cons:
Pacing was poor overall, and important story components are left bizarrely unresolved. The world the characters inhabited was practically devoid of anyone other than themselves, and the primary antagonistic agency in the show is just another thinly veiled sulky middle finger from a Japan still angsty about American foreign policy. Worst of all, the real action in this action show is sparse and unimpressive, with the protagonist spending as much time literally as figuratively "running away".

    Pros:
Characters actually did have some promise, just never fully realized. Not afraid to throw some curve balls, but really does it too late. Animation quality is consistent and good, but who cares if the actual story development sucks, right?

Recently finished Overman King Gainer. Tomino must have been off his meds for this one. It's as if he'd spent the previous couple of decades working all the demons out of his system with the likes of Gundam and Ideon, before embarking on this utterly bonkers show.

Mechs with dreadlocks? Check. Mechs that resemble a floating buddha? Check. Special attacks that involve making everyone in a 20km radius feel really emo that day? Sure, why not. This one's got it all.

    And then there's *that* opening:
